What is Luohan Gong?
Luohan Gong was developed by Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen Buddhism and is a combination of both Buddhist and Taoist understanding of the energy system. It is also the internal system in Choy Lee Fut kung fu. It is designed to strengthen the structure, circulation, and internal power through the breath and body movement while maintaining a calm empty mind. It develops a strong ability to regulate the nervous system. It integrates strength, flexibility, breath control, and a energetic coherent state.
Is Luohan Gong physically demanding?
The first form in the Luohan Gong system "Hands of the 18 Luohan" can be a more physically challenging form, as it focuses on developing structure, balance, and the breath. It is taught over a 10-12 week series with clear progressions.
The forms within this system can also be modified to meet you where you are, even if that requires you to sit in a chair, or use a prop for balance. You can still receive tremendous benefit. This form focuses on using body movements along with the breath to dredge the energy channels in the muscles and tendons of the body so blood circulation and energy flow can restored. Many students find it deeply stabilizing, opening, and energizing.
How does Luohan Gong differ from yoga or calisthenics?
Luohan is different than yoga as yoga works with primarily with integrating the mind and the body, but leaves out the energy. Calisthenics primarily just focuses on the physical body and leaves the mind and energy completely out of the equation.
Luohan Gong works all 3 (body, mind, and energy) at the same time creating a deeper integration and a more coherent state for self healing to occur.
